Just two days after finishing second at the NCAA golf championships,
Abbotsford's Nick Taylor earned himself a pretty nifty consolation prize today.
Taylor has a spot in the U.S. Open and will tee it up next week alongside the
likes of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and fellow Canadian Mike Weir at Torrey
Pines Golf Course in San Diego.
The 20-year-old amateur earned his spot by winning a sectional qualifier at
Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell, Ore. Twenty-seven players were competing
for two spots in the U.S. Open at the Oregon qualifer.
Taylor shot rounds of 70 and 68 to finish the 36-hole event at six-under par
138. That was two strokes better than second-place finisher Rob Rashell of
Scottsdale, Ariz.
Qualifying for the U.S. Open is just the latest in a long list of
accomplishments for Taylor, a member of Ledgeview Golf Club in Abbotsford.
On Saturday, Taylor tied for second at the NCAA Championships in Illinois and
helped his University of Washington Huskies place seventh in the team
competition. Last summer, Taylor won the Canadian Amateur title and made it to
the quarter-finals of the prestigious U.S. Amateur championship.
Taylor, who just completed his sophomore year at Washington, also won the
Canadian Junior championship in 2006.
