Marine Drive No Pushover For BC Amateur Competitors
Published: July 22, 2008 In the
BC Golf News
For a short course of only 6,361 yards while playing to a par 70, Vancouver's
Marine Drive Golf Club yielded only seven scores under par in the opening round
of the British Columbia Men's Amateur including a solid 5-under 65 by the
leader Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford.
The 21-year-old RCGA National Team member was cruising along at 6-under through
12 holes until bogey at 13 slowed his pace, however, Hadwin still finished with
a one shot lead over Victoria's Parker Lily, 19, and is four shots ahead of
five players tied for third place.
"I was six-under through 12 and neck in neck with Bryan Toth - then I bogeyed
13 and Bryan doubled," said Hadwin, last year's runner-up at the B.C. Amateur.
"After that, I focused and played ahead."
"I am hitting well off the tee and keeping it tight," added Hadwin, a
Management Major and All-American scholar on a golf scholaship at the
University of Louisville, where he's now a senior. "I just played Sahalee (in
Seattle) and it's a lot like Marine -- it was a good warm up for this course.
Lily may have equaled Hadwin's five birdie performance, but he also bogeyed two
of Marine Drive's five par threes that measure 167 yards each.
Among those tied for third at one-under are BC High School and BCGA Junior
Champion Eugene Wong, 17, of North Vancouver, just back from San Diego where he
captured the Callaway Junior World Amateur Championship; 2004 Canadian Amateur
winner Darren Wallace, 19, of Langley; Peter Ahn of Victoria, 21; Vancouver's
Geoffrey Butt, 24; and 2006 BC Amateur winner Bryan Toth, 34, of Victoria. Both
Wong and Butt have slight advantages since both are members at Marine Drive. In
fact, Wong, at the tender age of 15, won the club's Men's championship.
From among the field of 156 there was one three-some of special sentimental
interest to the Marine Drive Club members. It included 13-time BC Amateur
champion Doug Roxburgh of Vancouver, a four-time Canadian Amateur title holder
who was playing his 163rd round of BC Amateur competition at the age of 56;
32-year-old Kurt Cassidy of Vancouver, Marine Drive's 1998 BC Amateur champion;
and 54-year-old Steve Berry of Sooke, a member of Marine Drive when he won the
Amateur in 1981 over Roxburgh. All three shot 3-over par 73's and are tied with
a group of 14 players in 26th place.
In addition to competing for the provincial title, players vying for one of
four spots on the Willingdon Cup Team that will represent BC at the Canadian
Men?s Amateur at Paradise Canyon Golf resort in Lethbridge, Alberta July
28-August 1. The team will be determined following Wednesday's second round.
